The French group Phoenix draw elements from their eclectic ’80s upbringing to arrive at a satisfying synthesis of rock and synthesizers. Vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck d’Arcy, and guitarist Christian Mazzalai were a garage band based out of Mars’ house in the suburbs of Paris. Mazzalai’s older brother Branco joined the band on guitar when his band Darlin’ disbanded in 1995. The group got its touring start on the French bar circuit doing Hank Williams and Prince covers to drunken audiences. Two years later the band took on the name Phoenix and pressed 500 copies of a single on its own label, Ghettoblaster. The A-side was a punk rock song and the other a chugging Krautrocker, hinting at their eclectic tastes. Shortly after, they were signed to the Paris-based Source Records. Phoenix became well acquainted with labelmates Air when they acted as their backing band on several U.K. TV appearances. The result of the electronic exposure was a single called “Heatwave,” which was very similar in approach to ’70s disco. United, the group’s debut album, appeared in 2000 on Astralwerks and was recorded over two months. The album featured guest appearances from friends and family, including Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk), Philippe Zdar (Cassius), and d’Arcy’s mother’s choral society on the track “Funky Squaredance.” From that point, they issued Alphabetical (2004), It’s Never Been Like That (2006), and their mainstream breakthrough, the critically adored Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (2009). Part of the extended break between the third and fourth albums was due to Mars becoming a father (with his partner, director Sofia Coppola, Rovi. See Also Phoenix’s >Lastfm

Do you like Jazz? Do you like house? So you’ll very probably love Parov Stelar. Parov Stelar aka Marcus Füreder is a musician who lives and works in Linz, Austria. Despite the high quality of his sound, I really don’t understand why he is not so famous worldwide as he deserves. His early productions are marked by downtempo and chillout traces. However, nowadays, Parov has attended what looks his real calling: the vibrant and dancing electro-swing!*(I had some work to find a discography of this guy,and despite my efforts, i could not share with you his first album “Shadow Kingdom“, nor the Ep “Music I believe in” so if anyone knows where I find these two rarities, keep in touch;).See Also Parov Stelar’s >Lastfm

Miike  snow is a band formed in Stockholm in 2007. The band members are Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg. Before, they worked with artists such as Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Kelis and Britney Spears as producers and songwriters. The name “Miike Snow” comes from the Japanese film director Takashi Miike. What can I say? The band’s sound is hard to describe with words, it is easier to simply listen and draw your own conclusions. But beware! the songs of the band which has as its symbol a rabbit with antlers of moose can be highly addictive! See also Miike Snow’s >Lastfm

Sweden is a country that has always fascinated me. Before because of  his history, today  because of his crop of great music artists. I’ve discovered Robyn recently, despite the fact she already be in the “road” for a good time , and I can only ask for myself one thing; why I never heard about her before? For those who suffer from the famous Underground syndrome, just the fact of her being a pop singer can mean bad music. Pure nonsense. As she says: “I Like Music …. because it’s the way I want to express myself. It’s not a choice. It’s just always been there. It’s just what I do.” or in other words, Robyn gives us part of your soul with every song, you hardly get bored listening to her albums…See also Robyn’s >Lastfm

Blue foundation is a Danish band that got especially famous by their tracks in movies like Miami Vice (Sweep) and Twilight (Eyes on Fire – and this even isn’t the band’s best song!).Classifying Blue Foundation is not an easy job, but they mix electronic music with a bit of indie and instrumental, making something that you can call trip-hop, chillout or ambient. But this is not what matters, in fact. You can think that, as a Scandinavian group, its music is cold and freezing. But, this is not what you feel when you listen to them. Emiliana Torrini is a half Icelandic, half Italian singer. Prior to her appearance on the worldwide stage, she released 3 other albums in Iceland: “Spoon” in 1994, “Crouçie D’où Là” in 1995, and “Merman” in 1996. In November 1999 Emilíana Torrini released her international debut album, “Love in the Time of Science”,in a style clearly directed to Trip Hop. “Fisherman’s Woman” is a very different beat, it’s dripping with sadness but more frequently imbued with almost magical optimism. signified a departure from her earlier electronic roots to an acoustic-folk sound; applying the ethereal beauty of her voice in a much more intimate setting.”Me And Armini” is Emilíana Torrini’s most captivating, ambitious album. Unveils a more adventurous new side of her musical personality but sacrifices some of the emotional intensity. Me and Armini  runs a gamut of emotions within its melodies and compositions. So, listen up one of the best albums of 2008.

Chris Corner was a founding member of the band Sneaker Pimps and is now active with the IAMX solo project. I.AM.X attracts not only by the quality of sound and lyrics, but also by the visual and the eccentrically exotic choreography. Dramatic blend of the dark pop that began in 80’s. His lyrics deal with topics ranging from sex, drugs, religion and politics. Anyway, I.AM.X certainly will be remembered in future as a classic of underground music of our decade, a mirror that reflects a little bit of the nihilism present in this new generation.

Anders Trentemøller established his name as one of the greatest talents of electronic music, especially with the remixes for artists like Röyksopp, The Knife,Depeche Mode,Franz Ferdinand and Moby. The Copenhagen based Danish producer and multi instrumentalist started out with a number of yet classic single productions.subsequently consolidated His reputation in the minimal techno scene. To expand his horizon and show the world another side of his musical personality he worked on his debut album ‘The Last Resort’ (2006). The 13 instrumental tracks together form a musical story, almost like the soundtrack of a movie. ‘The Last Resort’ struck a chord with new audiences all around the world and became a international hit and earned a number of music awards as well as the ‘album of the year’ in various magazines. In 2007 followed two vocal singles taken from the album: ‘Always Something Better’ (featuring Richard Davis) and ‘Moan’ (with Danish singer Ane Trolle). This year, he released the album ‘Into The Great Wide Yonder’, Trentemøller’s second artist album.See Also Trentemøller’s >Lastfm

Music Hot Tip – Feist

Posted: August 6, 2010 in Indie
Tags: ,

Feist is a Canadian singer, who has a soft voice and engaging, these attributes alone are enough for a good acceptance, but surely these aspects are taken less relevance when looking at the compositions and especially the rhythm. It is very easy to become “addicted” to the musics of Feist. I for one, am listening during several weeks “Mushaboom” and “Secret Heart”, and cannot stop!  See also Feist’s>Lastfm

Crystal Castles is a Canadian band that has an innovative style in the music scene. Consists in the multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. His style is hard to describe (in my computer is in the “Electronic”, along with La Roux, Miike Snow, Röyksopp and so on.) The first impression I had from listen CC was of distrust, after all, the music seemed to be “all equal” and too much aggressive, as you can see in this show.
Of course, after listening more carefully, I could not take off the band of my playlist. Anyway, my role on this blog is to indicate what songs are worth to hear more between an album and another, taking into account not only my personal taste, but also by observing a general opinion on the internet. So, it’s the tip …See Also Crystal Castles >Lastfm
